Google says multiple services blocked in China amid - Financial Post

SAN FRANCISCO ? Google Inc. said several of its online services have been blocked in China.

Traffic to Google?s services in China dropped sharply beginning Friday evening there, according to an online ?Transparency Report? website operated by Google, which provides updates about access to its services in different parts of the world.

Among the sites affected were Google?s search engine and its Gmail web email product.

The disruptions come as China?s government kicked off the 18th Chinese Communist Party Congress this week to appoint a new generation of leaders. The country maintains media regulations that let it block websites that it deems out of compliance with those rules.

A Google spokeswoman said the company did not know why the disruption was happening. Google said in a statement that it had ?checked and there?s nothing wrong on our end.?

Ma Yuanchun, a spokeswoman for the Chinese consulate in New York, said she wasn?t informed on the matter and referred all queries to the relevant government authorities in Beijing. Calls and an e-mail sent after normal office hours to Hong Lei, a spokesman at the Chinese foreign ministry in Beijing, weren?t immediately answered.

Google?s YouTube video service has been inaccessible in China since 2009, while access to other services in China are blocked sporadically.

In 2010 Google relocated its Chinese search engine to Hong Kong after a spat with authorities over censorship and cyber-attacks that Google said originated in China. Hong Kong isn?t subject to Web restrictions imposed in mainland China.

Google rose 1.6% to US$662.69 at 1:33 p.m. in New York. The shares are up about 1% this year through yesterday.

Clever Money-Saving Tips For Students - Debt Consolidation Loans ...

Post image for Clever Money-Saving Tips For Students

Being poor and being a student go hand-in-hand. Students do not need to resort to selling plasma to earn extra money. With a bit of creativity, they can save money without making any sacrifices. They may even have enough extra to spend at the local pub. If you are in school, follow these tips to save yourself some money so you can enjoy everything that higher education has to offer. Just do not enjoy life too much or you may find yourself without a degree!

The 16-25 Railcard is perfect for full-time students and is available for one or three years. It features a one-third discount on railway travel across the UK. Cardholders also receive access to partnership contests and offers like holiday discounts and reduced prices for West-End theatre tickets. Cost of a one-year card is currently ?28 and a three-year card sells for ?65. Students who travel in groups may be able to secure group discounts like three or four adults traveling for the price of two.

The license fee terms from the BBC require consumers to pay the fee if they view or record television as it is broadcast. However, a license is not required for watching television on-demand online. Students can purchase a cable to connect their laptops to their televisions to view at no charge. Those who do pay for a license should request a refund for the summer months that they are not in their homes. The extra money can be spent on groceries.

It?s Easier Than It Looks To Save Money

When food shopping, students should buy in bulk and cook from scratch rather than purchasing ready-made meals. Pasta has a long shelf-life and makes an inexpensive meal for a flat full of students. Those who spend time shopping for other household items should take their NUS extra card and university card with them.

A store that does not participate in NUS may offer separate discounts. Specialized student discount sites like Studentbeans offer free memberships.

It can be expensive to print papers and other homework assignments on campus. Students should consider purchasing a printer to print their work at home. They will save themselves the stress of having to wait in long lines to print at campus and can even make money during the third year of school when everyone is printing dissertations.

Students who enjoy shopping for clothes and accessories can save money by working where they shop. Arcadia Group offers a 25 percent discount to employees of Topshop, Miss Selfridges, Topman, and its other stores and 20 percent off at BHS. Employees of New Look, The Body Shop, and Republic receive up to 50 percent off their purchases.

Freecycle is a great place for students to find free items like bicycles, televisions, and laptops. Charity shops offer books, CDs, DVDs, clothing, and accessories at low prices and there seem to be a few of these on most high streets. Car boot sales are weather-dependent but often include hidden treasures. Students should plan to be there bright and early to find the best deals.

Identifying Material Evidence From Crime Scene Carpets | Chemical ...

Forensic scientists may have a new tool to analyze suspicious fibers from crime scenes. The mass spectrometry method identifies dyes on nylon, a common carpet material (Anal. Chem., DOI: 10.1021/ac3025569).

The technique could provide backup for existing forensic fiber analysis techniques, allowing investigators to compare fibers from crime scenes with those associated with suspects. This new method also consumes a very small amount of the evidence, says David Hinks, a textile chemist at North Carolina State University, who developed the method with chemist Chuanzhen Zhou and others.

?Sometimes you get very little evidence from a crime scene. We want to minimize destruction of fiber evidence, especially when it is trace evidence,? Zhou says.

With funding from the National Institute of Justice, the team developed the method, which involves first cleaning residues off the fiber?s surface using a beam of ionized C60 fullerenes. Then the researchers use time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) to analyze the chemical fingerprint of the dye, fiber, and any trace chemicals on the fiber?s surface.

Most forensic labs currently employ polarized light microscopy to identify fibers. Some labs then extract the dye from the fiber and analyze it by thin-layer chromatography, Hinks says.

By analyzing fiber and dye at the same time with the new technique, researchers can also identify trace contaminants in the material from its industrial production process. Identifying these compounds could give investigators an idea of which company produced a particular piece of material, which would then improve the accuracy of comparisons of fibers found at a crime scene to ones from a suspect, he says.

?I?d like to see this applied to a real forensic case,? comments University of Manchester mass spectrometry expert John Vickerman. He agrees that TOF-SIMS could be useful for forensic scientists. ?They?ve shown what might be possible, but it is not yet a proof of principle for all cases,? he adds.

?Many forensic and conservation scientists shy away from using these ?destructive techniques? because they consume a small amount of the specimen,? he says. However, this work, he adds, ?clearly demonstrates that the amount of accurate information obtained from these techniques justifies their minimally destructive nature.?

The North Carolina State team is now extending the method to polyester and cotton.

95% The Sessions

All Critics (113) | Top Critics (37) | Fresh (107) | Rotten (6)

Forced to do all his acting with his face, Hawkes displays the kind of camera-arresting capability that has earned others Oscar nominations.

This is a crowd-pleaser of the finest sort.

Using only his tilted head, his eyes, nose, and mouth and that quizzical voice, Hawkes brings O'Brien to life.

It's funny and well-meaning, with great performances, but the story plays out more like an Afterschool Special with full-frontal nudity.

Most often with The Sessions the blunt comedy outweighs the drift toward sanctimony.

An extraordinary account of sexual exploration and intimacy against the odds, The Sessions is a powerful achievement.

Sex & a very singular man

Boasts a rare, inherent understanding of its subject, with Lewin now facing the prospect of becoming seriously hot property, as awards season beckons.

We are engaged by the compelling characters and a man's discovery of sexuality in a short span of time and in a unique way. And we are touched by the relationship that develops

Sex, religion, poetry and the disabled might be the subject matter, but nothing will prepare you for the emotions that are shared in this unique, poignant and unforgettable film

The most grown-up depiction of emotionally meaningful sexual relations... that will have any sort of general distribution in U.S. movie theaters in this or any of the next several years.

The Sessions resembles one of O'Brien's poems (which are featured in the story) - neither flawless nor ever-graceful in terms of technique but still gentle and sincere.

A dramatic, inspiring story that can be humorous at times with endearing characters. This is a crowd-pleaser that is sure to be a contender at the Oscars.

[ The Sessions] is very sweet and heartfelt, but never cloying or overly sentimental.

The Sessions is a truly inspirational work, grounded by a powerful, thought-provoking performance that lingers long after one has left the auditorium. It is one of the more memorable, if imperfect, achievements of 2012.

It's really a three-character comedy/drama, with the best elements of both genres.

"The Sessions" shapes its themes in an appealing way and keeps the script lively and engaging and funny.

This isn't the first film to explore the subject of the sexuality of the disabled. But it is, thanks to sensitive direction from Ben Lewin and empathetic performances that never condescend, among the best.

A remarkable story of bravery and compassion

With its assertive hero and inclusive humor, "The Sessions" is an inspirational drama you can feel good about in the morning.

Gets it right, in the essence of its true story as well as the social discomforts surrounding disability and sane discussion of sexuality.

Does Brad Maddox deserve his million-dollar opportunity?

An opportunity like the one Mr. McMahon granted to Brad Maddox on Raw comes along once in a million lifetimes. Many members of the WWE Universe and Superstars in the locker room might be wondering why the "Hell" Maddox deserves it.

(MORE: WHO IS BRAD MADDOX??| PHOTOS FROM HELL IN A CELL)

On next week's Raw, the developmental talent turned WWE referee will step into the ring to face Ryback with a million-dollar WWE contract hanging in the balance. That's right ? the same man responsible for the most heinous attack by a WWE official ever gets the chance to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a Superstar if he can win just one match.

OK, we know what you're thinking: Ryback is going to tear this rogue ref apart like a turkey leg at Thanksgiving. You can imagine the punishment Ryback will inflict on the person responsible for ending his undefeated streak and costing him a potential WWE Championship victory inside Hell in a Cell. Does Maddox even stand a remote chance of making the nearly 300-pound juggernaut wince in pain, let alone pinning his shoulders to the canvas for a three-count?

Regardless of Maddox's long odds next week, however, one has to question the path which led him to such an extremely rare opportunity. Following his controversial actions at WWE Hell in a Cell and subsequent questioning by WWE's Board of Inquiry, Maddox finally decided to explain his blatant interference during the WWE Title Match to the entire WWE Universe on Raw (VIDEO?| PHOTOS). But instead of expressing remorse for the uproar he had caused, the disgraced official sounded ever so boastful about his plan ? one that he confessed was his alone ? to finally get noticed in WWE after struggling to get his foot in the door for years.

"I made an impact," Maddox said on Raw. "My actions, very simply, were driven by my desire to be somebody. Well, I'm somebody now! People know my name everywhere!"

The defiant Maddox then proceeded to demand a WWE contract and a match against Ryback ? two wishes that Mr. McMahon promptly fulfilled.

Is it fair that Maddox's attention-grabbing stunt and whiny speech led him closer to breaking through as a WWE Superstar? Or is The Chairman hoping a brutal defeat to Ryback will be exactly what breaks Maddox's spirit for good ? fitting discipline for his unforgivable attack at WWE Hell in a Cell?

Next Monday, Maddox might severely regret the night he ever crossed Ryback. But maybe, just maybe, he could pull off one of the greatest upsets in history and seize that coveted WWE contract. If the latter somehow comes to pass, letting Maddox slip through the door could prove to be a very costly decision.?(EXCLUSIVE: MADDOX ON HIS BIG MATCH VS. RYBACK)
